On February 25 2020, a scientific meeting took place at the headquarters of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow. Our OeGF member Filip Suchoń gave a lecture on planned and unrealized projects which intented expanding and modernizing the Cracow Fortress. Due to the time frame of the lecture, only projects from the beginning of the 20th century to the First World War were discussed.
First, the process of giving opinions, approving project concepts and subsequent administrative steps leading to the building permit and implementation was presented to the audience.
Plans were discussed at various scales – from single objects (reconstruction of the old provisional Werk “Bronowice Małe” into a permanent fort), implementation of armored battery in the vicinity of the Werk “Tonie”, through fortification complexes (construction of a Traditor with battery and infantry position, accompanying the Werk “Marszowiec” ) up to the new course of the noyau with a number of machine gun pillboxes. Another interesting fact was the conceptual sketch of expanding the fortified front on the far foreground of the fortress, associated with the increasing range of enemy artillery.
In addition to enthusiasts of fortification history and academic researchers, also representatives of municipal authorities were present at the lecture. This promises a beneficial cooperation for dealing with Cracow’s fortification heritage in the future.
Deutsche Zusammenfassung:
Am 25. Februar 2020 hielt das OeGF Mitglied Filip Suchon an der Polnischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Krakau einen Vortrag über “aufgegebene Projekte zur Expansion und Modernisierung der Festung Krakau im 20. Jahrhundert”.
So wurden z.B. die Überlegungen zur Ausdehnung des Fortifikationsgürtels, Neubau von Panzerbatterien oder der Umbau provisorischer Werke in permanente, besprochen.
Die interessierte Zuhörerschaft, bestehend aus Festungs Interessierten, akademischen Forschern und politischen Vertretern lässt jedenfalls auf einen positiven zukünftigen Umgang mit dem Festungs-Erbe hoffen.
