Werk I Salis-Soglio

Before the construction of the Siedliska Group, Przemysl’s ring of forts on the eastern side of the town was close to the city centre. In this area the landscape was mainly flat, dominated by Cereszyna Hills next to the village Siedliska. Because of these hills, the decision was reached to change the layout of the fortress ring and move it a few kilomitres to the East to cover the Cereszyna Hills.

The terrain lay-out and the distances to the neighbouring forts forced the Geniedirektion to build not only a single fort but a group of fortifications – Werk I “Siedliska” (1893 renamed into Werk I “Salis-Soglio”) with 4 permanent batteries, which were in fact small forts in front of the main fort.

The original project of the main fort, designed by the later General-Genie-Inspektor Salis-Soglio, included two Gruson armoured turrets in the centre of the front rampart. Due to the prospective high cost and the reluctance of the artillery staff towards armoured batteries, the building of the turrets was cancelled and open gun positions were constructed instead.

The initial drawings of the fort weren’t changed a lot, in order to keep the option to install the two Gruson turrets at a later point in time. Though this never happened.

Its isolated location and the prepared but unbuilt turrets gave the fort an unusual shape. There was a dominating central part on the front rampart relative to the left and right parts of it. The barracks were located around four courtyards while the ammunition magazines were situated under the central part of the front rampart. There were six ammunition hoists and one gun hoist in the fort.

In the 1890ies the Siedliska Group was rebuilt. In front of Werk I “Salis-Soglio” four armoured forts were erected in an advanced position – two in locations of former position batteries and further two new position batteries.

In 1914-1915, fort I “Salis-Soglio” was approx. 2 km behind the front line. But its dominating central position caused shelling of the fort by the Russian army. Initially the commando of the local defence district was located in the fort, but because of the shelling, it was relocated to barracks in the village of Siedliska. Traces of direct hits are still visible on several walls in the fort.

Just before the surrender of the fortress to the Russian besieger on March 22nd 1915 the caponiers were blown up by the Austrian garrison itself. Fortunately the rest of the fort remained untouched. Therefore Fort I Salis-Soglio is the most impressive fort to be visited in Przemysl.

Deutsche Zusammenfassung
