Ein offenes Wort! – frankly spoken!

In den letzten Jahren ist das Interesse an den Hinterlassenschaften des Ersten Weltkrieges sprunghaft angestiegen. Dies hat unter anderem auch dazu geführt, dass die Frage einer gewissen touristischen oder kulturellen (deutlich seltener!) „Verwertbarkeit“ von fortifikatorischen Objekten immer stärker an Einfluss gewonnen hat. So weit, so gut! So erfreulich es auf den ersten Blick erscheinen mag, dass man sich nach Jahren des völligen Ignorierens dieser historischen bzw. technischen Denkmäler endlich um sie zu kümmern beginnt, so fragwürdig sind manche Auswüchse dieser Aktivitäten. Denkmalschutz — und dieser ist auch für „unsere“ Objekte zu reklamieren! — dient dem Schutz und der Erhaltung von Ensembles und Objekten, die von kulturhistorischer, aber auch von allgemein historischer Bedeutung sind. Ziel denkmalschützerischer Aktivitäten muss es daher sein, einerseits die gesetzlichen und ideellen Rahmenbedingungen zu schaffen, andererseits die Kulturgüter dauerhaft zu sichern, zu erhalten und zu pflegen. Dazu gehört jedenfalls auch, dass diese Objekte nicht beschädigt, zerstört und/oder eigenmächtig verändert und somit verfälscht werden. Es ist uns natürlich bewusst, dass Denkmalschutz in fast allen Ländern Europas eine leider nur zu oft zahnlose Anstrengung ist, Kulturgüter vor privaten und ökonomischen Interessen, vor brutaler Verkehrspolitik und vor historischer Ignoranz zu bewahren. Letztere tritt auch dort zu Tage, wo man oft voll des besten Willens versucht, genau diese Geschichte „wieder erstehen“ zu lassen.

Und in dieser Beziehung tut sich im Moment speziell in Österreichs südlichem Nachbarland Skurriles! Da werden ganzen Forts quasi „renoviert“, tatsächlich aber neu aufgebaut, wobei sowohl historische Geschehnisse „wegretuschiert“ werden, als auch jede künftige Bauforschung erschwert wird. Da werden historische Infanteriestützpunkte „restauriert“; sie erhalten „neue“ Einbauten, die natürlich nach zwei Wintern wieder völlig verrottet und desolat sind. Altsubstanz mischt sich mit modernem Müll. Da werden regelrechte „Grande Guerra-Disney Lands“ errichtet, deren Sinn und Zweck dunkel bleibt.

Es ist keine Frage, dass Objekte erhalten und zugänglich gemacht werden und dass sie auch genutzt werden sollen. Dazu sind Einbauten und Sicherungsarbeiten, die auch in die historische Substanz eingreifen können, durchaus notwendig. Es ist aber nicht einzusehen, dass man eine historische Ruine wieder in ein intaktes Gebäude verwandelt. Das ist kein Original mehr, das ist nur noch ein Abklatsch des Originals und eben nicht die Wirklichkeit. Welchem Zweck soll das dienen? Hier ist leider oft das vollständige Fehlen von ausgereiften Konzepten festzustellen. Was will man dem Publikum vermitteln, außer dem sinnlosen Verbrauch von Geldern?

Wir appellieren an alle Verantwortlichen mit diesem Erbe unserer gemeinsamen Geschichte sorgsam und behutsam umzugehen! Die Geschichte und ihre Denkmäler nachhaltig zu sichern heißt nicht, sie neu zu erfinden und neu zu bauen!

In recent years the interest in the legacy of the First World War has skyrocketed. As a result the question about the touristic or (to a much lesser extent!) cultural “usability” of the fortified objects has gained more and more importance. It seems to be good news at first that after years of utter ignorance people eventually start to care about the historical monuments and technical artifacts. However, sometimes the activities tend to be rather questionable and somewhat over the top.Heritage conservation (which has to be claimed also for “our” fortified objects) means to protect and preserve groups of buildings and objects that not only have cultural but also general historical significance. Therefore the goals of heritage conservation activities must be to create the legal and ideological framework, on the one hand, and to permanently protect, preserve and maintain the cultural objects, on the other hand. This also means to make sure that these objects are not damaged, destroyed or altered without authorization, i.e. tempered with in any way. Of course, we are aware, that sadly in most European countries historic heritage conservation is more or less simply a “toothless effort” to protect historic heritage places from private and economic interests, brutal transport policy and historical ignorance. Unfortunately, the latter often applies when people act with the best intentions and try to “re-build” history.

Currently bizarre things are happening in this regard, especially in one of Austria’s southern neighboring countries where forts are claimed to be „renovated“, but actually are simply rebuilt! These activities have the effect that historical landmarks and events are quasi „retouched and manipulated“ and any future historical building research is being made almost impossible. For example, historic infantry bases are „renovated“ and „new“ fixtures are fitted, which, of course, are completely rotten and wrecked after only two winter seasons. Original historic structures are mixed with modern trash. Veritable „Grande Guerra Disneylands“ are being built, whose purpose remain in the dark.

There is no doubt that fortifications need to be conserved and at the same time made accessible and used. To this end it is even justifiable to make structural adaptations in the historic structure for safety reasons. However, it is not understandable why a historic ruin has to be converted back into an intact building? For then it will no longer be genuine, instead it would only be a poor imitation of the original and not reflect reality at all. What purpose would this serve? Sadly, sustainable concepts are often completely lacking in this context. What do people want to convey to the general public with this kind of projects, except the pointless expenditure of funds?

We appeal to all the persons in charge to deal carefully and respectfully with this legacy of our shared history! To sustainably preserve history and its monuments does not mean to re-invent and re- build them!
